İZMİR - Eda Pınar, an expert psychologist evaluating the use of accusing language in mainstream media broadcasts, especially in daytime programs, said: “There are interested in devaluing the act of the perpetrator and why the victim is exposed to it. Ignoring the truths is violation of human rights.”

 

Gender perception is also reinforced against women with the programs broadcasted in the format of "marriage" and "finding the missing", which have been broadcasted in the daytime on televisions for years. With these programs, which open the lives of women to public debate, women take on a "guilty" profile and men take on an "innocent" profile. An important part of the society that spends the day at home is somehow exposed to these programs of mainstream media channels, which are made at the same time, with almost the same perspective. Expert psychologist Eda Pınar evaluated the media’s perspective on society that criticizes gender.

 

‘We live in a country where women are blamed for even the crimes committed by men’

 

Eda said that the mainstream media’s handling of women is not different from that of society and pointed out the media's role in influencing society. Eda said: “We are reliving gender roles through the media. The woman is exposed to the discriminatory language she has experienced in all areas of life by the media. In the news, we see that the women who were excluded, not the person who committed the action, which we directly refer to as accusing the victim in the parts about rape, harassment, and sexual violence. Victim blaming is the most common thing we come across when dealing with women in mainstream media. While a person is not considered guilty in the constitution until proven guilty, a woman is declared guilty directly without the need for a court decision. We live in a country where women are blamed for even the crimes committed by men.”

 

‘There are women who have to be cautious outside their home’

 

Underlining that the media is one of the areas where power is the most brutal and its representation is strongest, Eda said: “Daytime programs actually squeeze people in many areas of life. There are so many women today who have to take a cautious step outside their home. What we are talking about starts at the intended point as we step out. Daytime programs are made during the hours when women watch television at home, based on knowing how to impose the desired thought.”

 

‘The psychology of the woman is not questioned, but her motherhood is questioned’

 

Stating that the patriarchal structure always feels obliged to impose a mission on women to establish authority over women, Eda said: “There is identification in the programs. Who is associated with marriage and family in society? The woman is associated. For this, the programs are offered by women. When we open the news and programs, we come across statements such as "What kind of mother was she, she left her child". Nobody questions the psychology of that woman, what kind of life she lives, but questions her motherhood. Because if the crime is loaded on the woman there, she can quickly blame and destroy her from the society.”

 

‘Ignoring the truths is violation of human rights’

 

Noting that the discourse in the media is rapidly internalized, Eda continued her words as follows: “The whole society is affected by the discrimination applied to a gender. To gain control, it is concerned with the reason why the victim is subjected to, devaluation of the act of the perpetrator. This is exactly the part we call manipulation. So, this is one of the most important control mechanisms. It is demanded to deal with the behavior of the victim by preventing the right of the person to be directly informed. Thus, they form not real truths, but truths desired to be created. They mislead people by saying "The problem is not there, here". Ignoring the truths is violation of human rights.”
