Demanding 10-year prison sentence for journalist

DİYARBAKIR - Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office demanded that Ayşe be imprisoned for up to 10 years in an indictment against journalist Ayşe Kara.
 
Journalist Ayşe Kara, who was detained on June 26, 2020, as part of the investigation launched by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against the Democratic Society Congress (DTK), was released on June 29 with a judicial control measure. Thereupon, Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office prepared an indictment against Ayşe on the charge of "being a member of a terrorist organization". In the indictment, the prosecutor demanded a prison sentence of up to 10 years for Ayşe.

In the indictment, there were statements that Ayşe "is a member of the Free Women's Congress (KJA) and the Free Journalists' Association and carries out activities within the DTK". The indictment also included the "Botan March" of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), where Ayşe went to follow the news in Mardin in 2016.
Ayşe's statements were also included in the indictment. Ayşe said that she is not a member of the DTK, but as a journalist, she participated in the press events and congresses organized by the DTK before. Stating that she is a member of the Free Journalists Association because she is a journalist, Ayşe noted that she is not a member of the KJA.
As a result of the evaluation of the entire file scope and the documents obtained, the prosecutor demanded a prison sentence of up to 10 years for Ayşe on the charge of "being a member of a terrorist organization".
 
The indictment was accepted by the Diyarbakır 5th High Criminal Court.
