Free Women’s Movement issued a press statement in front of the Human Rights Monument in Koşuyolu Park of Diyarbakır province within the scope of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, November 25. The closed Free Women's Congress (KJA) Spokesperson Ayla Akat Ata, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MP Sibel Yiğitalp, HDP Women’s Assembly members, the Socialist Women's Assembly (SKM) members, Amed Peace Mothers Assembly members and many women were present at the press statement.

The women unfurled a banner reading, “We will stop genocide against women, we will make life free” and shouted slogans, “Women, life, freedom”, “We will stop genocide against women” and “We say no to male-state violence” in Kurdish and Turkish.

‘We will use our right of self-defense’

HDP Diyarbakır Co-chair Filiz Buluttekin read the statement and she stated that women have become the target of economic, politic and state violence. Noting that sexism, the discourses of masculine mindset and special war policies are linked to each other, Filiz said the root of this violence originated from the same politics. Stating that the AKP is responsible for femicide, Filiz added, “We will defend our right of self-defense and we will resist the fascist politics.”

‘The greatest reason for violence is war’

Sibel Yiğitalp also made a speech and she said, “Rights violations towards women and children have increased in the conflict environment. Women are seen as a tool that only gives birth to children. Women and children suffer more in wars. Where there is war, violence, abuse and rape begin, and it makes everyone an enemy. The biggest reason for the increase of violence is the wars. As women, we demand the end of this war as soon as and to return the negotiating table.”

Lastly, Sibel read short notes written the stories of killed women.
