ADANA - Women of Adana state that policies of government and religious fatwas encourage child abuse and they say organized anger against increasing child abuse is a must.
On February 3, a man named Sedat Keser sexually abused a three-year-old baby in Yüreğir district of Adana province. Reaction to this incident is increasing day by day. Eğitim-Sen (Teachers’ union) Adana Branch Chair Seçil Sönmez stated that the policies of government and religious fatwas encourage child abuse, and she said, “The state has to issue special laws for these people, the judiciary should sentence them the necessary jail term.” Stating that the parents have also responsibility against the sexual abuse, Seçil said, “The parents should teach that the both male and female sexes are human beings while raising their male children. If all women unite, this world becomes beautiful again thanks to the power and smile of the women and children.”
Organized anger is a must
Adana Women’s Platform member Çiğdem Güvercin said, “Social gender equality should be a part of the curriculum in schools; it must be compulsory for all organizations, even for state institutions and organizations. Our anger is quite big. Reactions to singular events cannot create systemic differences. We can only change our lives and our way of living with ongoing solidarity not with sudden anger. Organized anger is a must against sexual abuses.”
